Roz Chast

in conversation with André Bernard

June 14, 2024

5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

After a successful launch of the Masters Series last summer, join author André Bernard, Vice President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, for a second season of conversations with literary masters. On June 14, Bernard speaks with The New Yorker cartoonist and illustrator, Roz Chast.

Roz Chast is a prolific illustrator whose distinctive style is virtually synonymous with The New Yorker, where her cartoons and covers have appeared since 1978. She is the author of more than twenty books including her most recent publication, I Must Be Dreaming (2023), a graphic narrative that explores the phenomenon of dreaming. In the book, Chast illustrates her own dream world–a place that is sometimes creepy and always hilarious. Illuminating, surprising, funny, and often profound, I Must Be Dreaming takes readers on an illustrated tour of “Dream-Theory Land,” guided by insights from poets, philosophers, and psychoanalysts alike.

She has written over twenty books, lectures widely, and received many prestigious awards, including honorary degrees from Pratt Institute and the Art Institute of Boston. Chast has received the Reuben Award, the Heinz Award, and the Visionary Woman Award. In addition, she has been inducted into the Society of Illustrators’ Hall of Fame, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
