Dwight Garner

in conversation with André Bernard

July 12, 2024

5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

After a successful launch of the Masters Series last summer, join author André Bernard, Vice President of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, for a second season of conversations with literary masters. On July 12, Bernard speaks with critic and author, Dwight Garner.

Dwight Garner is the senior book critic for The New York Times, whose now famed (and sometimes feared) reviews appear weekly. In addition to his journalism, which has appeared in numerous publications, Garner is the author of The Upstairs Delicatessen: On Eating, Reading, Reading about Eating, and Eating While Reading (2023), a story that serves up the intertwined pleasures of books and food. The product of a lifetime of obsessively reading, eating, and every combination therein, The Upstairs Delicatessen is a charming, emotional memoir – one that only Garner could write. In it, he records the voices of great writers and the stories from his life that fill his mind as he moves through the sections of the day and of this book: breakfast, lunch, shopping, the occasional nap, drinking, and dinner.

Dwight Garner is senior book critic for the New York Times, whose now-famed (and sometimes feared) reviews appear in the paper once a week.  He is the author of Garner’s Quotations: A Modern Miscellany and, most recently,  The Upstairs Delicatessen: On Eating, Reading, Reading about Eating, and Eating While Reading (2023), which Adam Begley, reviewing it for London’s Times Literary Supplement, called “as satisfying as a midnight cheeseburger.”

The author of five books of literary miscellany, André Bernard was a Senior Editor at Simon & Schuster, Editorial Director of the Book-of-the-Month Club, and VP and Publisher of Harcourt Brace before joining the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation as its Vice President, administering its Fellowship program.
