The Greater Inclination
Edith Wharton’s first published short story was “Mrs. Manstey’s View,” published in Scribner’s Magazine in 1891. Her first collection of fiction, The Greater Inclination, was also published by Scribner’s but contains none of her early, published fiction, which she considered inferior. Instead, the eight stories collected here mostly appeared for the first time; of the handful that already been published, the earliest was from 1898.

This collection transformed her life. As she wrote in her memoir, “Any one walking along the streets might go into any bookshop, and say: ‘Please give me Edith Wharton’s book,’ and the clerk, without bursting into incredulous laughter, would produce it, and be paid for it, and the purchaser would walk home with it and read it, and talk of it, and pass it on to other people to read!”
