design for The Mount.

one visit.
- Groups may also combine a tour of the house or gardens
with attendance at one of our popular summer lectures.
A Guided Tour of the Gardens at The Mount & at Naumkeag
This popular program showcases The Mount and Naumkeag,
two celebrated historic landscapes in the Berkshire hills
of Western Massachusetts. The special tour explores how
European design with an American twist influenced two very
different gardens. The gardens at The Mount were designed
by one of America’s greatest writers, Edith Wharton,
and reflect her embrace of classical European design principles.
Naumkeag’s gardens are the work of pioneer landscape
architect Fletcher Steele, and incorporate innovative and
abstract variations on European Beaux Arts styles.
Programs for high school and undergraduate students:
Edith Wharton wrote some of her most important literary
works during her decade of residence at The Mount. This
program, designed to fulfill language arts curriculum requirements
for Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut, highlights
the author’s life and the way in which it influenced
her work. Students will spend 45 minutes with a dedicated
guide visiting Wharton’s library, her bedroom –
where she wrote every morning – and other significant
areas of the house.
During this 45-minute program, students will learn about
life in one of the most significant and well-preserved Berkshire
country houses from the Gilded Age period. Students will
be asked to place themselves in the shoes of the Whartons
and their household employees as they explore living rooms,
bedrooms and service areas with a dedicated guide. This
program is designed to fulfill social science curriculum
framework requirements for Massachusetts, New York, and
Connecticut.
These programs are also available to interested
adult groups as well.
