Group Tours

Picture Perfect Days

Bring your groups to The Mount, named a 2014 top-ten house tour by Fodor’, for a memorable visit. Our guides share their knowledge of the beauty and history of Wharton’s home and tailor their tour to your group’s particular interests. Discounted rates apply to groups of 10 or more people and please make reservations in advance.

We offer tours for groups of all sizes and interests of all kinds:

Guided House Tours

One of our skilled guides will lead your group on an hour-long exploration of Edith Wharton’s gracious summer home. The tour reveals the history of The Mount from its building to its restoration, and chronicles Wharton’s life, her remarkable achievements and her literary legacy.

The house tour features three floors of elegant formal and private rooms. Highlights include Wharton’s library, her newly restored bedroom suite, and back of the house areas, including the old kitchen. Tours appeal to lovers of architecture, restoration, history, and literature; and can be customized to emphasize a particular area of interest.

Guided Garden Tours

An experienced guide will lead your group on a 45-minute walk through The Mount’s restored formal gardens. Originally designed by Wharton, the three acres of tailored grounds feature grass terraces, an English lime walk and French-inspired, sunken Italianate, and rock gardens.

The garden tour recounts the history of the estate’s structures and plantings, discusses the influence of Wharton’s 1904 publication, Italian Villas and Their Gardens, on her landscape at The Mount, and reflects Wharton’s passion for gardens and beauty.

This tour involves walking and some stairs. For groups with mobility issues, we offer a formal garden talk on the terrace.

Group Ghost Tours

By popular demand, The Mount now offers private after-dark group ghost tours. Additional fees apply.

Book Clubs

What better place to talk of books and of writers than in the home of one of the best? We will create a sparkling day for your club; with a reserved spot on The Terrace, refreshments of your choice, and a skilled Wharton interpreter to lead your tour or discussion. Prices vary by package.

For groups of 10 or more, advance arrangements can be made for lunch and/or other refreshments. Please inquire about details and costs. Click here for information about the Terrace Café.

Be sure to leave plenty of time to browse through our museum bookstore and gift shop’s large selection of Wharton titles, garden and design books, and specialty gifts.

Planning your trip for July or August? End your summer day at The Mount by attending our popular Wharton on Wednesday readings, or enjoy live music on The Terrace on most weekends in July and August. Call for details or see our calendar.
