Back by popular demand, Clark and Mount members are invited to Edith Wharton’s home for a special conversation and reception with Clark curator Esther Bell.
Join Robert and Martha Berman Lipp Chief Curator, Esther Bell, for a lecture highlighting the exhibition Renoir: The Body, The Senses. Though like many painters of his generation, Renoir was interested in capturing the bustling scenes of modern day Paris, Renoir repeatedly returned to the subject of the body—and particularly the nude body—even during the height of his Impressionist phase. As Émile Zola wrote in 1876: “Renoir is a painter who specializes in the human figure. One could call him a Rubens illuminated by Velázquez’s brilliant sunlight.” Bell will consider Renoir’s critical reception then and now.
