Join author Roberta Silman and Matt Tannenbaum, the owner of The Bookstore, as they discuss Roberta’s new novel Secrets and Shadows. Hailed as “a harrowing story that readers will find compelling to the very end,” by Kirkus Reviews, Secrets and Shadows delves into the long-term effects of World War II on a marriage. Giving audience members an inside look into the writing and research process, Roberta and Matt will delve into the inspiration for the book and the art of writing historical fiction.

Roberta Silman is the author of five traditionally published works of fiction. Her short stories have appeared in magazines including: The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Hadassah, RedbookThe Virginia Quarterly Review, and The American Scholar. She is a recipient of both Guggenheim and NEA Fellowships and has received numerous writing awards.

Matt Tannenbaum has owned and operated The Bookstore in Lenox since 1976.
Eight years ago he added the Get Lit wine bar. While there are still more people who
take pictures of the Get Lit sign than who belly up to the bar for a drink, he considers
the move a grand success! His bookselling background extends back to his years at the Gotham Book Mart, a literary
mecca in New York City for most of the twentieth century. Both the Gotham and The Bookstore
were featured in a sweet book called “Footnotes from the World’s Greatest Bookstores”,
a pictorial anthology of celebrated bookshops around the world, whose author Bob Eckstein
was feted along with Tannenbaum at The Mount in March of 2017.

The Mount is a Massachusetts Cultural Council UP designated organization welcoming participants of all disabilities. Please contact Nicole Williams at 413-551-5100 or by email, nwilliams@edithwharton.org, to discuss accommodations needed to participate fully in this event.
